T1 is the most popular in a family of high speed digital services originally invented for the Bell System. The "trunk carriers" were developed to pack two dozen phone calls on a single line connecting telephone company offices. Higher speed T3 and faster lines can carry hundreds of phone calls on coaxial copper and optical fiber cables. Competitive businesses need T1 lines to support web servers and email servers.
T1 also connects PBX phone systems and dedicated lines for Intranets and Virtual Private Networks. The costs of both the T1 lines and the routers and PBX systems that connect to them have dropped dramatically in price and cost of ownership. Once again, T1 is a business grade data line that delivers reliable and consistent service. Several years ago T1 line was a privilege, granted to big call centers and Internet service providers. If your organization has its own IT infrastructure and you have 10 or so employees with even 4 phone lines - it will be wise to consider integrated T1 service from one of our partners, we may be able to bring your operational costs down.Â
T1 vs. Cable.
Â
As a small business owner you are puzzled by a swarm of providers who promise high speed and low price. Today there are dozens of local providers who offer "business" grade services. But do they really provide the service. We deal with that situation on a daily basis. Let’s compare some basic features that make T1 service of choice for all of our clients.
Mail Server. Any messaging solution will simply not function on Cable due to some very harsh limitations. Port 25, port that is used by SMTP protocol, is blocked for incoming and outgoing connections, making your mail server useless. Should your cable provider open the port - you will be able to receive e-mail, they will even claim that you are able to send, but it works only through Provider's "proxy" servers with limitation (about 1000 messages per day). then they will tell you that you can send your mail directly, bypassing their "proxy", but since you do not have access to RPT records (Reverse DNS - very crucial mechanism in sending mail) your mail will be rejected as SPAM by about 75% of all mail servers on the Internet, which will effectively make your mail server useless and unreliable. Now do a little math, your Cable cost you, let’s say $30 per month + all attempts made by your IT Service provider to make things work + possible hosted mail solution + loss of business due to unreliable email server = a lot of money. On another hand T1 is designed to be transparent when it comes to messaging. You will have access to RPT records and concept of dynamic IP is unknown to T1. The bottom line is: to have functional messaging solution on your network you need a T1 service at the very least.
Speed. Cable service comes is many shapes and colors, and with incredible speeds, but lets test them. lets say you are on the speed testing site, like www.speedtest.net. If you have Cable you will have very high download speed for only the closest server, as soon as you will try to put some miles between you and test server, your speed will drop significantly. why is that? Cable does not own nationwide network and download speed for user in New York will be very low when he is accessing servers in California. T1 service does not have this problem, if you are in New York - you will have, pretty much, same download speed with your neighbor as with servers on another side of a country. Cable is a "shared" service, in other words, you are sharing your data line with your neighbors. if you have other users who use the same Cable provider in your building, their Internet activity will impact your speed. T1 is a dedicated line of service.
Reliability. T1 service providers guarantee anywhere from 99.5% to 99.9% up time. Try to find out what is a guarantee with your Cable provider. Our partners.
